About the Event

On the social media app TikTok, creators upload bite-sized videos to a platform with a massive and international audience. One often thinks of comedy, dances, and cooking tutorials, but they may be surprised and pleased to also find Yiddish content on TikTok! Cameron Bernstein will discuss her experience becoming a Yiddish content creator in the 21st century, engaging and communicating with a diverse global audience of Yiddish language learners or enthusiasts, and the current state of Yiddish social media.

Cameron Bernstein is an artist and Yiddishist from the Chicagoland Jewish community. Cameron began learning Yiddish her fourth year at the University of Chicago and, since graduating with the class of 2020, has channeled her education into making engaging and accessible content about Yiddish language, culture, and history across platforms like TikTok and Instagram (@c.o.bernstein). She was the 2021-22 Communications Fellow at the Yiddish Book Center, and will begin medical school in the 2023.
