About the Event
Yiddish has been rapidly gaining prominence across the world. Professorships and university programs are increasing, and major universities are now offering Yiddish for fulfillment of the language requirement. Yiddish classes at all levels, live and online, are offered by organizations such as YIVO, the Workers Circle, and the Paris Yiddish Institute, to name only a few. Klezmer groups and choirs draw large audiences, as do performances on stage and in film. Lectures in and about Yiddish are increasingly popular, and audiences have greatly increased thanks to Zoom. Professor Mallow will present examples of each, and more.
Jeffry V. Mallow is Professor Emeritus of Physics, Loyola University Chicago and Affiliate Professor, University of Haifa. He is a member of the Forward Association, publisher of The Forward and Der Forverts and honorary chair of the Chicago YIVO Society. A graduate of the Workers Circle Yiddish schools, he was Director of Jewish Culture at its Camp Kinder Ring. Among his publications are the Jewish humor book Our Pal God and a collection of his political essays, Zionist Diarist.
