About the Event
Miriam Karpilove (1888-1956) was a prolific Yiddish author of short stories and serialized novels, known for her sharp-tongued, daring, and unapologetically women-centric attitude. In this lecture Kirzane, who has translated several of Karpilove's works, will explore Karpilove's pointed criticism of turn-of-the-century Yiddish societal expectations around gender and sexuality that came at considerable expense to women. It will be a fascinating conversation about this important book Diary of a Lonely Girl. Please consider purchasing the book here and reading it before the event on January 15, 2023.
Jessica Kirzane is the assistant instructional professor of Yiddish at the University of Chicago and the editor-in-chief of In geveb: a Journal of Yiddish Studies. She is the translator of three works by Miriam Karpilove: Diary of a Lonely Girl, or the Battle Against Free Love (Syracuse UP, 2020), Judith: a tale of love and woe (Farlag Press, 2022), and A Provincial Newspaper and Other Stories (Syracuse UP, forthcoming).
