About the Event

2025 marks the hundredth anniversary of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Since its founding in Vilna (then in Poland, now in Lithuania) YIVO has played a leading role in the study, documentation, and preservation of East European Jewish history, Yiddish language and culture, and mass immigration to the US. Join Chicago YIVO for a special online lecture by Samuel Norich, former YIVO executive director, on the past, present, and future of this remarkable cultural and scholarly institution.


Samuel Norich was executive director of the YIVO Institute from 1980 to 1992. He retired as publisher and CEO of the Forward newspapers in 2017, after having served in that role for two decades. He is the author of “What Will Bind Us Now: A Report on the Institutional Ties between Israel and American Jewry” (1994.)
